How to Link Your CAC Card with Your Military Account
A Common Access Card (CAC) is vital for active military personnel and Department of Defense contractors. It provides access to various systems, facilities, and networks. Linking your CAC card to your military account is crucial for streamlined access and security. Follow these steps to ensure a proper and secure connection.
Ensure CAC Reader Installation
Check if your computer has a CAC reader. Laptops issued by the military usually have one integrated. If not, you can purchase one online. Plug the CAC reader into an available USB port. Your computer should recognize it automatically. If not, you may need to install specific drivers provided by the reader’s manufacturer.
Install Required Software
Install middleware software that enables communication between the CAC reader and your computer. Common middleware includes ActivClient on Windows and Centrify or PKard on macOS. Download and follow the installation instructions provided by the software vendor.
Access Necessary Certificates
- Windows users: Open Internet Options via Control Panel. Go to the Content tab and click Certificates. Import the necessary DoD certificates.
- macOS users: Use the Keychain Access application to import certificates. Download the required DoD Certificate bundle from a trusted source and install them.
Configure Web Browser Settings
Most military systems function best with specific web browsers like Internet Explorer, Edge, or Chrome. Check the recommended browser for the system you intend to access. Ensure your chosen browser is up-to-date.
Install Required Browser Plugins
- For Internet Explorer, the DoD Configuration Extension is necessary.
- For Chrome, the DoD Certificates Plugin must be installed.
- Other specific plugins and add-ons may be required depending on the system you need to access.
Insert Your CAC Card
Once your CAC reader and software are properly configured, insert your CAC card into the reader. The light on your CAC reader should indicate that it has detected the card.
Navigate to the Appropriate Portal
Access the portal for the military system you need. Common portals include DEERS, MyPay, and DoD Enterprise Email. Use the direct URL provided by your commanding officer or IT support team.
Select CAC Login Option
When you reach the login screen, select the option to log in using your CAC. This usually involves clicking a button or link that says CAC Login or Sign in with CAC. Your browser should prompt you to select the proper certificate, typically labeled with your name and email address.
Enter Your PIN
After selecting your certificate, a PIN prompt will appear. Enter the six to eight-digit PIN associated with your CAC card. If your PIN is correct, you will be granted access to the linked military account.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Certificate Not Recognized: Ensure that all required certificates are installed correctly. Reinstall if necessary.
Browser Issues: Clear browsing history, cache, and cookies. Ensure plugins and extensions are up-to-date.
Incorrect PIN: After several failed attempts, you may need to visit an ID card office to reset your PIN.
Automatic Linkage on Next Login
Once linked, your CAC card will often serve as the primary method of logging into your military account. On subsequent logins, simply inserting your CAC card and entering your PIN will grant access quickly and securely.
